Glossary of Circle cbsc class 10th
Circles
Chord
The chord of a circle is a line segment that joins any two points on the circle.
Circle
A circle can be defined as a set of points in a plane which are at equal distance from a fixed point.
Diameter
The diameter of a circle is a chord that passes through the centre of the circle.
Length of a Tangent
When a tangent is drawn from a point to a circle, the length of the line segment between the point of contact and the external point is called the length of the tangent to the circle.
Normal to the Circle
The line containing the radius through the point of contact of a tangent is called the normal to the circle at the point.
Point of Contact
The intersection point of a tangent and a circle is called the point of contact.
Secant
A line that intersects a circle at two distinct points is called a secant. A tangent can be considered a special case of a secant, the endpoints of whose corresponding chord coincide.
Tangent
A line that intersects a circle at only one point is called a tangent. There can be only one tangent at any point on a circle. A tangent at any point on a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact. There can only be one tangent parallel and two tangents perpendicular to a given tangent.
