About Indian States
Northern Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the Northern Region of India includes six states: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh.
- The important geographical features of this region are the Indus-Gangetic Plain and the Himalayas.
- These features delimit-ate Northern Region from the Central Asia and the Tibetan Plateau.
- North India was the historical centre for many empires including the Guptas, the Mauryas, the Mughals, the British, the Sikh empire and many more. The Pilgrim Centres and Heritage Sites in North India include Char Dham, Vaishno Devi, Golden Temple, Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and many more.
Eastern Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the Eastern Region of India includes four states: Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
- This region is located by the east coast of India, near the Bay of Bengal.
- Eastern India also comprises of the easternmost states of India such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
- One of the most important rivers, Brahmaputra, flows through this region. Brahmaputra originates in Tibet and eventually empties itself into the Bay of Bengal.
Western Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the Western Region of India includes four states: Rajasthan , Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra.
- This region is one of India’s highly industrialized areas with a large population.
- Western Region of India is bordered by the Thar Desert in the Northwest and the Vindhya Range in the north.
- A large portion of West India shares the Deccan Plateau with South India.

Southern Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the Southern Region of India includes four states: States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- Southern Region of India is located in the Peninsular Deccan Plateau.
- It is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the West, the Indian Ocean to the south and the Bay of Bengal to the east.
- It also includes two mountain ranges; The Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats.
- The Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and the Tungabhadra are major rivers of South India.
Central Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the Central Region of India includes two states: Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
- Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh belong to the central region of India.
- They are known as the “Heart of India”.
- The new state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
- Madhya Pradesh is surrounded by Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
- Chhattisgarh on the other hand has Maharashtra to its west, Madhya Pradesh to its northwest, Andhra Pradesh to its south, Jharkhand to its northeast, Orissa to its east, and Uttar Pradesh to its north.
North-Eastern Region
According to the Geological Survey of India, the North-Eastern Region of India includes eight states: Assam, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
- These forested states at the east tip of India are landlocked by hills.
- These share a common topography, with lush green valleys, rugged mountains and rich bio diversity.
- Each of the states in north east India touches an international boundary.
- Sikkim shares the international boundary with three-China, Nepal, and Bhutan.
- Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh share the international boundary with China and Myanmar.
- Nagaland and Manipur share it with Myanmar.
- Meghalaya and Tripura share the international boundary with Bangladesh and Assam with Bhutan.
